Increase in home robberies and tips on how to protect yourself.

It is good news that the total number of robberies has dropped significantly in recent years.

In particular, robberies of shopkeepers have decreased significantly. This is partly because business owners and the government have invested heavily in preventive measures, such as better security and improved camera surveillance. These measures have significantly increased the chances of catching criminals.
At the same time, a shift is taking place. Robbers more often choose a home rather than a store as their target.

In the 1990s there were hardly any residential robberies. Recent survey figures now show that 4 in 10 robberies are committed at a residence.

Low interest rates on savings accounts and the possibility that customers may have to add money in the future to put their money in a bank may cause us to start keeping our savings in an old sock en masse.
Researchers expect criminals to change their strategy as a result, and it seems plausible that criminals will try to reduce their chances of getting caught by striking at homes, with all the consequences that entails.

How do you reduce the chances of a home robbery yourself?

-Always check who is at the door. Don't just open the front door. If you don't trust it, first ask who he/she is and what he/she is coming to do. If you still don't trust it, call 911.
-Agreed with yourself and your family members that after a certain time in the evening you will not open the front door when the doorbell rings.
-Never let strangers into your home, no matter how trustworthy they may appear.
-If someone says they are coming on behalf of the municipality or an institution, ask for proof of identification or call the company or agency to verify.
-Never take your wallet to the door. Did you open the door and want to grab something like your phone or money: close your front door!
-Come to the door asking strangers to call the emergency number: Don't let them in and call 911 yourself.
-Don't let strangers use your restroom, refer them to a public restroom.
-Home robberies also take place during the day. Therefore, be alert even during the day to people with wrong intentions.
-Use a door chain or door handle or speak to people at the door via an intercom system.
-A video intercom is a convenient and secure tool for seeing who is at your door and communicating securely.
-Teach your children not to open the front door without your permission.
